How to solve it
Listen to the ending of the word. The ending -teen always means a number between 13 and 19, while -ty means a whole ten: 13 to 19 versus 30, 40, 50 and so on.
Worked example
Sixteen ends in -teen, so it is 16. Sixty ends in -ty, so it is 60. The two words sound alike but differ by 44.
Common mistake
Mixing up the teens with the tens. If you are unsure, say both versions out loud — the stress falls on the last syllable in sixTEEN and on the first in SIXty.
