How to solve it
Check what one step of the scale stands for, then follow the column away from zero — upward into warmth or downward into frost. Below zero the numbers grow as the temperature falls.
Worked example
A level four divisions below zero on a two-degree scale reads -8 degrees.
Common mistake
Counting downwards as if the numbers were still rising. Below zero, -8 is colder than -4.
