How to solve it
Convert both numerals into ordinary numbers, do the arithmetic normally, then convert the result back if the answer is wanted in Roman form.
Worked example
II times VI is 2 x 6 = 12, which is written XII.
Common mistake
Working with the symbols directly. Roman notation has no place value, which is precisely why written arithmetic moved away from it.
