About this exercise

Prices after a discount or an increase.

How to solve it

Work out the change as a percentage of the original, then add it on or take it off. Multiplying by 0.8 for a 20 percent discount does both steps at once.

Worked example

A 20 percent discount on 50 removes 10, leaving 40.

Common mistake

Reporting the discount instead of the new price. The question usually asks what is paid, not what is saved.
