Vertex of Parabola
About this exercise
The turning point of a parabola.
Example problems
A few of the problems this exercise asks. The printable worksheet holds ten fresh ones.
- Vertex of: y = -x² − 6x − 8
- Vertex of: y = x² + 2x + 6
- Vertex of: y = x² − 4x + 2
- Vertex of: y = -2x² − 12x − 19
Try it yourself first — open a section below only if you get stuck.
How to solve it
The x coordinate is minus b divided by twice a. Substitute it back to find the y coordinate.
Worked example
For x squared - 4x + 3, the vertex sits at x = 2, where y = -1.
Common mistake
Forgetting the minus sign in the formula. It flips the vertex to the wrong side.
