How to solve it
The denominator tells how many equal segments the correct bar is cut into, and the numerator how many of them are shaded. Check the segment count before even looking at the shading.
Worked example
For 2/8, the right bar is cut into eight equal segments with exactly two of them shaded.
Common mistake
Counting only the shaded parts. Two shaded segments out of five is a different fraction from two out of eight, so the cut matters as much as the shading.
