How to solve it

When the pieces are named outright, find the area of each and add them together. No cutting is needed — the decomposition has been done for you.

Worked example

Rectangles of 4 x 5 and 6 x 5 assemble into a figure of 20 + 30 = 50.

Common mistake

Multiplying dimensions across pieces. Each rectangle keeps its own pair of sides, and only the finished areas are added.
