About this exercise

Finding the largest number in a set, which underpins both ordering and estimation.

How to solve it

First compare how many digits each number has, because more digits always means a bigger number. Only when the lengths match do you compare the leading digits.

Worked example

Among 70, 82, 79 and 26 every number has two digits, so compare the tens: 8 beats 7 and 2, which makes 82 the largest.

Common mistake

Judging by the final digit. In 79 and 82 the nine is the biggest digit on show, yet 82 is the larger number.
