How to solve it
Work from the right and write each carry down straight away. Do not try to hold a chain of carries in your head.
Worked example
999 + 888 carries at every column, giving 1887.
Common mistake
Losing the final carry. When the leftmost column overflows, the answer gains an extra digit.
