How to solve it
Work from the largest symbol down: M is 1000, D is 500, C is 100, L is 50, X is 10, V is 5 and I is 1. Take out as many of each as fit.
Worked example
24 is XX for twenty and IV for four, giving XXIV.
Common mistake
Writing four identical symbols. IIII is wrong; four is written IV by subtraction.
