A missing hundredths digit is a silent zero, so 5.7 can be read as 5.70. Once both numbers show the same places, stack the points and add as usual.
5.7 + 2.48 becomes 5.70 + 2.48 = 8.18.
Assuming 5.7 is smaller than 5.48 because it has fewer digits. Length says nothing about size.
